Carolina BBQ on I-77 in SC

I am going to be traveling toward Charlseton on Friday and would like to find a great BBQ place somewhere south of Charlotte perhaps near Columbia. We are traveling down I-77. Any suggestions?

  1. If you can wait until you're between Columbia and Charleston, stop at Sweatman's in Holy Hill.

    1. John D. Hite and Son on Dreher Rd. in West Columbia is a good choice. Take out only. Be sure to order hash as well as barbecue.

      I second bbqdawg's rec for Sweatman's.

      1. I'll second the JD Hite rec. When you get to the intersection of I-77 and I-26 you'll be no more than 10 minutes away. (Whatever you do, don't bother with Maurice's BBQ which is also in the neighborhood.) If you make it to Hite's do yourself a favor and order a pound or two of the "rib cut" and specify you _don't_ want any loin meat with it. Get a loaf of white bread to accompany and you'll be in hog heaven. The chicken is pretty good too.
