padron peppers in ann arbor/southeast michigan area-- anyone know where I can buy some?

Before I take the plunge and order these from La Tienda.com, I just thought I'd ask around to see if anybody knows of any in the area? I have read that Shishito Peppers cook up in a similar fashion- so if you have seen those around, that would be helpful, too! thanks so much! I miss spain so much!

    Ripped from Zingermanns Facebook post....

Zingerman's Delicatessen will be at the Home Grown Festival in the Kerrytown Farmers Market area this Saturday September 12th. 5-10 p.m. I hope you can come see us!

    We'll be serving:
Tapas style Padron peppers grown at Tantre Farms
Italian Style Sausage - Berkshire hog from Apple Schram, with sautéed peppers on a crusty roll
Paw Paw Gelato - michigan paw paw fruit made into gelato by Zingerman's Creamery

I noticed that San Chez Bistro in Grand Rapids is featuring padron peppers on their menu this month. I realize that's not exactly "close" to Ann Arbor, but maybe they have a local supplier? Perhaps you could email and ask...

Stephiez - I have also been thinking about pimientos de Padron in Ann Arbor! Ever since I read the Nov. 1999 Gourmet article by Calvin Trillin about his quest for pimientos de Pardon in NY, I have dreamt of finding a source in Ann Arbor. Did you send away to La Tienda for them? I wonder if there is a farmer at the Ann Arbor Farmer's Market who has grown them? Please let me know if you find a source, and I , too will keep you posted! If you haven't read the Trillin article, do so at once!

They are Spanish peppers not Mexican, which is probably why you received the response you did. Until I saw your post I had never heard of them either, I had to look them up?

Out of curiosity what is it about them that is so good? I love peppers and since this is one I've never tried I am interested.

            Thanks,

            Aaron

I'm a pepper lover too, and after reading so much about these, I ordered some from LaTienda. What's special about them is both their flavor and the suprise factor. They are similar to a short banana pepper, and about the same color, but the shape is more oblong than pointed on the end. Most of them are very mild, but every so often, one of them is a bit hot. Not jalapeno hot, mind you, but noticeably hotter than the rest. The instructions said to fry in olive oil until the pepper collapses a bit, then top with sea salt and eat whole, which is what we did. They really are addictive.

That sounds pretty good. Often the simpler the preparation the better things taste. Thanks!

Have you checked with La Colmena in Mexicantown? I know they're a Spanish pepper but La Colmena might be worth a try.

One World Market in Novi might have shishito peppers.
