You might find some growing in the area -when I've gone on walks, I've often seen the purple (not the green) growing along with the wild catnip on UM north campus (family housing) & other places in Ann Arbor. Any Japanese or Korean grocery will usually carry fresh shiso, for example in Ann Arbor (Japanese)Tsai Grocery near Target & the Korean store on Broadway.

I am an interloper from Minnesota, but noticed your post. If you can find the red shiso, you can steep it in white wine vinegar. The color turns an incredible rose like I have never seen before in an herb vinegar. And great shiso flavor. Makes incredible gifts and a good way to use any extra shiso you may end up with.
We have grown our own in our gardens but have not seen the red shiso plants in our local nurseries lately in the spring.

I don't know for sure about this herb, but have you tried Noble Fish in Clawson? That's a genuine Japanese grocery (and nifty little sushi bar).
