Piroshki in San Francisco
We have a strong Russian population here in San Francisco, and I have always wondered what constitutes a good piroshki. I have seen many of the stores that sell these items, and yet to fully understand their merits. Not being terribly familiar with Russian cuisine, can anybody describe what I should be looking for? Perhaps I should not be looking at all? If I should, where should I find?

Here's a thread on that subject from earlier this year.

Some are fried, some are baked (similar to fruit turnovers). The fried ones are my favorite when done right, as with the fondly remembered House of Piroshki in SF. The dough was fried on the outside but soft and pillowy on the inside. The fillings were of good quantity and very nicely seasoned.
