Golden Steamer Bakery on Mott St.
New across the street from Saigon Bakery. From two visits I have a mixed bag. The steamed and baked pork buns have great texture - neither tough or grainy, the rice rolls were made to order. The Char Siu filling is only for sweet bbq lovers, so it was fine for me. The rice sheets were the thickest I could imagine. The Egg Custard Tart, cute small size, had a sweet cookie dough crust. I much prefer the flaky crusted egg custard tart from the Orange Bakery down the block.

I returned today and had steamed Char Siu. The steamed bread surronding the pork was great and, "...that's my weakness now.". When eating buns from other stores or restaurants, after I've finished the pork I'm tempted to toss away the bread, which is often dull and lifeless. Here that thought didn't cross my mind.

re: marthagrace
Finally hit this place yesterday. I got the 8-pk of "mini" (still pretty large) chicken buns. Really good--great bun and delicious filling. Not quite as gingery as I hoped from an article I read about Golden Steamer, but still very tasty. Will try the char siu next, I can basically never resist it but I've had overly-sweet versions before.
I'd actually hoped to try the pumpkin buns but they were out (this was around 4pm). Has anyone tried this yet? Was wondering if it was pumpkin puree or curried pumpkin or some other variety.
What about the sausage--is it just sausage, or is it sausage and vegetables?
I would've preferred a variety pack, not sure if they have them. I appreciated the neat, brightly-lit shop (in comparison to the place where I buy turnip cakes on Mott south of Bayard), and that the woman who greeted me spoke English pretty well, as I can't read Chinese. So maybe they actually have clearly-labeled variety packs that I missed due to not being able to read.
