msp: Elsie's

  • 1

Remember when Stan Mayslack used to hand slice each and every sandwich and the lunch crowd was lined up out the door. Well, Stan is long gone, but if you'd like a blast in the past think about Elsie's (on Marshall, just south or Broadway. I've been stopping occasionally for their Friday night Clam Chowder. It's homemade and delicious, with a generous portion of clams in every bowl. I have been on the lookout for a good flame-cooked burger so I tried one tonight. Had it on grilled sour dough and they customized my order without a blink (swapped for swiss). Burger came out as ordered, perfectly medium rare. I had sampled their Friday night fish fry in the past and was impressed with the tasty batter. I correctly assumed that the onion rings would be equally impressive. Best I've had since the Anchor Inn closed. It's a nordeast, friendly spot, great parking, friendly staff, very affordable. It's the kind of place the Food Channel visits, they still operate an old-school bowling alley in the back.
