Aquavit Dining Room - Still worth going?
A good friend and I are meeting up in NYC over Labor Day weekend. We're coming from different states, and want to make the most of our meals while we're in town. He's a major Scandanavian-phile (is that a word?) and wants to go to Aquavit, but some readers on Zagat and Times online have complained that quality has slipped. We were thinking of doing the whole hog, i.e., chef's tasting menu. Less interested in going to the Cafe for dinner. So is it still worth it to go for chef's tasting menu in the Dining Room, or should we forget dinner altogether and just drop in for Sunday smorgasbord brunch (or neither)? Thanks!!
I know there have been some complaints, but based on my experiences, you won't get any from me. We've been to Aquavit's dining room for lunch twice, as well as for the Sunday smorgasbord once. At the first lunch, last year, we did the chef's tasting menu, and it absolutely blew us away! The second lunch was this past May. We ordered a la carte, and the food was delicious. We also very much enjoyed the smorgasbord, especially the huge variety of herrings and the smoked fish.
i think its best days are behind it. ive been here for 2 business lunches and one business dinner in the last 2 years and i always leave and think to myself: 'gee, id hate to have paid for that'...for the money, there's much better food out there.
totally different food but i had a fantastic dinner this past weekend at convivio for example. i left very impressed and its probably 2/3 the price of aquavit.
