Best Coffee on Plateau du Mont Royal

If you were staying at Anne ma sœur Anne, where would you get your morning coffee?
http://www.annemasoeuranne.com/hotel/...

I'm willing to walk up to about 10-15 minutes for an exceptional cup, and I drink macchiatos

Knowing the opening times of the cafe would be helpful, too

    1. Unfortunately, Myriade is way out of your 10-15 minute range, as is Caffe in Gamba. Closest I can think of (around 10 minutes?) is Cafe Art Java , 837 Mont Royal East, a few blocks east of St. Denis. They don't list their hours on their web site, and I'm not sure what they are offhand. You're much closer to Brulerie St. Denis, but I wouldn't consider them to have exceptional coffee.

          Have heard that one of Caffè in Gamba's former employees is about to open (or maybe already has) an espresso bar on Rachel or Marie-Anne. Will try to get some specifics.

          There's also Café Rico -- 969 rue Rachel Est, www.caferico.qc.ca -- but they're more a local roaster than a world-class espresso bar. The dearth of exceptional espresso on the Plateau is odd, to say the least.

              Also a little bit out of your way, but what I would stand by as the best cappuccino in Montreal-a little cafe that opened recently on Laurier est (1309) called Lapin Pressé. Really really really great cappuccino's (can't say it enough).

                1. re: green241

                  How long would it take to walk to Lapin Pressé from my hotel?

                    1. re: Onara

                      30 mins at least. To Laurier is 20 mins alone, then the street number is at the corner of Chambord (east side of Parc Laurier). That's another 10-15 east of St-Denis.

                      Brulerie St-Denis is just down the street at 3967 St-Denis.

                        1. re: Onara

                          I would disagree-its a lovely walk in the mornings and if you walk slowly it will take you google's time (23 mins). At least if it were my choice over the other options-I would opt for the extre 5-10 mins.

                          Subject to confirmation, I think this is it:
                          Café Névé
                          151 Rachel East
                          514 965-3117
                          www.cafeneve.com

                          The website's not up but they have a Facebook page -- www.facebook.com/pages/Montreal-QC/Ca... -- that appears to say they'll be opening in August.

                            1. re: carswell

                              Café Névé's open as of last Wednesday.

                              Three-group Aurelia machine, Anfim grinders, 49th Parallel beans.

                              Staffers include Luke and Maude, whom some of you will know from Caffè in Gamba.

                                  Went there this afternoon for a quick take-out of café au lait.

                                  smooth, velvety and not bitter (without sugar) ...they are also serving breakfast stuff ( poached eggs for example, but I don't think the "kitchen" can do really more)

                                  The place is nice.

                                    1. re: Maximilien

                                      was there Sept 19 as well and enjoyed the café au lait. As I was sitting there, I was trying to picture the old JR Bike shop that it used to be...it's hard to imagine!

                                2. re: cherylmtl

                                  I've gone a bit off of Caffe Art Java as they are very expensive and my general feeling is that quality has decreased.

                                    1. re: eoj

                                      Agreed, but what else in the area would meet the OP's criteria? It's still better than most...

                                        1. re: cherylmtl

                                          Haven't had an espresso at Caffe Art Java in a while, but the quality of the rest of some of their offering (food and latte) has been most irregular, and service was very inneficient the last time. However, may still be worth the espresso shot. But I wanted to add that in the area, Aux Deux Marie (4329 Rue St-Denis, Montreal), while not world-class, is pretty good. And they have a nice terasse right on St-Denis.

                                            1. re: cherylmtl

                                              Agreed, plus they have free wireless, lots of plug-ins, and lots of tables.

                                          • I would suggest Chez Jose as a great little breakfast joint with good coffee and probably 5 minutes walk from your hotel. It's at Duluth and Hotel de Ville. Not sure about hours, but it's always been open when I've gone for breakfast.

                                            A quick google search gives these hours:
                                            * Mon: 7:00AM - 6:00PM
                                            * Tues: 7:00AM - 6:00PM
                                            * Wed: 7:00AM - 6:00PM
                                            * Thurs: 7:00AM - 6:00PM
                                            * Fri: 7:00AM - 6:00PM
                                            * Sat: 8:00AM - 6:00PM
                                            * Sun: 9:00AM - 6:00PM

                                                I'll second that rec :)

                                                To the OP: In case you didn't know, the nearby resto recs on your hotel's website are pretty much all worth checking out for dinner.

                                                • I would suggest Café Rico - it's very close to your hotel, and they have excellent coffe. Be carefull though : they oppen at 10am; close at 6pm - and are closed on sunday
                                                  Excellent fair trade coffee roasted on the spot...

                                                    1. re: cath_couturier

                                                      I can't wait until 10am for morning coffee

                                                        1. re: Onara

                                                          Well make it an afternoon coffee then -
                                                          Anyways, the place is closed for the annual holidays now, re-opening early august

                                                            1. re: cath_couturier

                                                              Aux Deux Marie is very close to your hotel and quite good. I drink green tea but my husband likes to get his coffee beans at Aux Deux Marie and he also drinks Macchiatos. He also likes Caffe Art Java and never seems to find Café Rico open when he wants. Even closer for your morning fix is Cafeo which has a nice ambiance and is a wifi hotspot, might not be the best espresso. There's a Java U nearby too. Oh, this is an old post, Onara must have had lots of coffee now ...

                                                                1. re: Plateaumaman

                                                                  I've now been & gone - was in Montreal from Aug 24-28

                                                                  And I (shamefully) confess I didnt once go out for morning coffee, since the bag & drip filter machine provided in the hotel was just fine

                                                                  Had some fantastic food though! (but that's on another thread)
