Hello all.

Just signed up for Chowhound today. What a great site! We will be in Providence Labor Day weekend. We are staying at the Renaissance.

Does anyone know of restaurants with oysters specials at the bar? I know some places have $1 specials for happy hour.

Also, we'd prefer to walk to dinner from our hotel. What are your favorite places to go in this area? Price is not an object.

Also, any hidden gem lunch spots or cafe you can recommend.

McCormick and Schmick's has happy hour oysters. They are a chain, though, if you don't dig on chains. Providence Oyster Bar also has a similar deal, I believe.

In the immediate area, I'd opt for Gracie's. It's fairly high end American and is one of the best in the city. Check out their lovely website. http://www.graciesprov.com/

Before/after dinner cocktails at Local 121 are a must. I don't love the food, but their cocktail list is inventive (for PVD) and well-executed. The space is also fun. It's also very close to your hotel and Gracie's. Otherwise, there's not much going on around there.

For brunch, hit either Nick's or Julian's, both on Broadway. They're a bit of a hike from your hotel, but nothing major. I believe both have menus posted online. The specials at both are killer.

Federal Hill is a nice stroll if you've never done it. There are lots of italian shops, cafes, gellaterias and restaurants.
