Organic Farm-to-Taco Truck Chowdown Invitation, Saturday 7/25 11am to 4pm, Salinas

Please join your fellow chowhounds for street food in the organic fields of Salinas on Saturday, 7/25.

Three of Salinas' famous loncheras (aka taco trucks) will be selling traditional eats at ALBA farms made with organic produce. Jacquez Hot Dogs will be serving agua fresca made from ALBA's strawberries and bacon-wrapped hot dogs. Acambaro will have al pastor sliced off the spit, flor de calabaza (squash blossoms), nopales (cactus), and other meats for tacos. Mariscos La Perla will offer seafood:tostadas de camarones, pulpo, tostadas de ceviche, cocteles. The fresh salsas made by Salinas street vendors from closely guarded family recipes can throwdown with the best. The trucks will be serving from about 11AM to 2PM or earlier if the food runs out.

Two years ago chowhounds rallied in Salinas to support the vendors in their fight and now is a great time to revisit.

ALBA is the farmworker-to-farmer incubator that launched some of the Ferry Bldg, Palo Alto and other Bay Area farmers markets most popular small organic farms (e.g., Catalan Farms, Avalos, J&P Organics). ALBA's u-pick from 11am to 4pm includes strawberries, carrots, raspberries, basil, fennel, lettuce, cilantro, tomatillos, beets, squash blossoms, onions, flowers, and more that you can pick yourself or select from the farmstand.

At 1PM, our group will have a special tour of the farm. Please arrive no later than noon to take in the cooking demonstrations, strawberry ice cream-making, and lunch at the trucks.

This is a family-oriented event, please bring the kids. Admission is free. Your cost will be the food and produce purchases. Please bring cash and your own bags. Considering the price of farm-to-table and Oustanding in the Field dinners, a trip to Salinas this Saturday is a huge bargain!

ALBA is located at 1700 Old Stage Road south of Salinas. Heading south on Hwy 101 turn left on Potter Rd, then right on Old Stage Rd. Turn right at the ALBA sign and follow the signs into the farm. Please carpool if you can. The Gilroy Garlic Festival is this weekend, so route yourself down Hwy 1 and avoid Hwy 101 south of San Jose.

Yahoo's forecast is for a high temperature of 70 degrees on Saturday.

Please email me at MsWine@onebox.com if you would like to take part in the tour and i will send you an Evite. No reservation is necessary for the other activities.
