Mac & Cheese - Calgary

So, I was just talking to a co-worker, and it turns out that her absolute hands-down favourite meal is Macaroni & Cheese.

Because I'm absolutely bored to tears right now, I figured I'd hop on Chowhound and see if anyone happens to know of places in Calgary that serve a mean Mac & Cheese.

So, has anyone got some recommendations for me? :)

I second this... but then again it IS a Cheese shop... it should be the best.

Finally discovered it this summer- fanfreakingtastic.

        1. North Sea Fish Market at Willow Park has takeaway lobster mac 'n cheese. Yum :)

          1. I second Avenue Diner, it's divine. The mac & cheese at Bumpy's looked good the last time I was there, mus =t try next time.

              1. lobster mac at Brava is great.

                1. Diner Deluxe has a great baked Mac and Cheese with sundried tomatoes...my wife thinks its a bit too greasy but I keep telling her, thats the flavour!

                  1. I had really great lobster mac and cheese at the Metropolitan grill... but I think Farm MUST have great mac and cheese. ^_^ I've been meaning to go there.

I agree I really like the lobster mac and cheese at the Met. Mmmm creamy gruyere sauce!

                    2. Fresh Kitchen, in Altadore, has great mac'n'cheese to take home

                      1. The one my friend had at Palomino looked quite yummy.

                        1. The Altadore on 16 St. S. W. has the best Mac & Cheese, check them out.

there's an early version of Janice Beaton's mac & cheese recipe on the web (google it, its on the Canadian Living website...). One difference is that the recipe on the web only has 2 cheeses, whereas someone at Farm told me they are using 3: oka, gruyere or gouda, and aged cheddar. I make it quite often and using varying proportions of these and it works out well.

aha! cayenne! i'll have fun experimenting with the cheeses. thank you.

I found the macaroni and cheese recipe via Canadian Living website. I used three cheeses, gouda, aged white cheddar and havarti. I used three cups instead of two cups of cheese. Wow! Fantastic.

                                  1. I remember the Mac and Cheese and Vicious Circle being large and quite delicious.

                                    1. Well, we've tried a couple places since I initially posted this. First one was Avenue Diner, and we were quite pleased with their Mac & Cheese offering. Second trip we went to Palomino. I think our final thoughts were "not bad, not great". It's pretty much in the middle.

Farm is definitely tops on the list, but it's too far away for a work lunch, so we'll have to hit it up for dinner sometime. I'm sure we'll also give Diner Delixe a try at some point as well, and I like the looks of the one on the Vicious Circle menu.

The mac & cheese at Palomino is pretty tasty with smoked chicken or pulled pork, but it's not really mac & cheese. Instead of the requisite creamy Bechamel sauce, it's just grated cheese over noodles.

Howdy! Fred. Palomino owner here. Actually, the mac is made with bleu, manchego, plus white and orange cheddar. It's made to order so bechamel is out of the question. I prefer it baked 'cause the cheese gets all burny. Yum. So we throw some cheese on top and broil it to finish it.

Glad you did it though. We try hard.

I'll definitely give it a try with the pulled pork or chicken sometime. I've been meaning to come back down to try the ribs sometime (more than likely on the monday all you can eat night) :)

                                            1. re: electroleum

Yes - I agree - this is very memorable Mac and Cheese. Worth the trip! The pulled pork is fantastic!

LOVE your mac&cheese! Palomino forever! :-)

                                          2. If you are in Kensington try the mac and cheese at Higher Ground

                                            1. Good Earth has pretty good Mac & Cheese.

Yes- seconded, especially if you get nice amount of bread crumbs in yours. Kinda pricey but good.

                                              2. Kind of a fast-food place, but I like the mac & cheese side at Chachi's.

                                                1. Lobster Mac and Cheese at Vintage is truly a great dish.

they have lobster mac n cheese?! I always thought it was with truffles unless their menu recently changed. Gotta try that sometime. I love Vintage

                                                  2. Farm all the way - only place that can compete IMHO... Rose and Crown's was good but not on the same level
