Is it me or is this place a bit overpriced ?
Had dinner last night and did not think that for the price point it was all that great.
Sure you can BYOB which is a saving's but i thought it was a bit expensive for such a casual place.
Nothing wowed me and at I believe it was $16.00 for a bowl of pasta bolognese that was just OK.
I still think Farfalla on Hillhurst is the best Italian in the area. Visitors from Italy even said it was like a neighborhood trattoria back home. Domenico was good, but pricey. Michelangelo was mediocre. I've had uneven meals at Lil Dom's (once had to send back pasta that was clumped together in the bowl!). Aroma was over-sauced and salty. Capriccio was better when it occupied the space of Speranza and the original owner/chefs were there. That's my two liras (euros?) worth.
Gotta agree Farfalla has never let me down and I only order delivery from them and its still good when I get it.
Always the same order pizza, grilled vegis and a pasta, never lets me down.
Agrre about Capriccio after my last visit I decided I would never go back but it I prob. will.
Capriccio pizza is not bad but farfalla imho is better.
Lil Dom's was an oven the last time I went so hot inside bar is nice dinner also on the fence about but have only been once to be fair, enjoyed the bar and oysters.
well I feel validated thanks folks hehe
I was hoping for a casual spot but at that price point I will take Barbrix any day and we needed such a spot in the hood.
I also remember Il Capraccio days way back when and it was fine and was a regular but then they started to slip.
Domenico is not getting good feedback so far as I have seen except from you chowpatty.
Will give them a try next time the pasta urge hits.
fwiw I looked at Zucca's menu just random choice and price point is almost the same I know apples and oranges but really for 2 bucks more I can order a negroni and sit in A.C.
Gee, you now have an option of hitting Domenico on Silver Lake Blvd. and trying some of SIV's 2-star rated food and report back your comparison, even though she indicated that pasta was not its strong suit.
Or just going down the street and having a nice meal at Barbrix, with decent beer & wine available.
I don't think she really indicated that pasta wasn't Domenico's strong suit -- I think she said the meat pastas were heavy or oversauced. We had a wonderful spinach cavatelli with octopus there and I would highly recommend the pasta. Like Sherry, I wasn't as impressed with the risotto.
As far as Speranza, I haven't tried it but that is my problem with most Italian places -- it seems like they're basically all overpriced.
Pat - re-read the review, and the pasta assessment did refer to meat oversaucing. But this line: "Braised rabbit in a black olive sauce over a bed of polenta makes a wonderful light summer main course". Sure does not sound anything light to me, rabbit or black olive sauce or polenta, much less all three on the same plate.
Has she just lost it?
Sorry also Pat, but you can keep all the octopus in the world - one of the world's really drab foodstuffs, regardless of who adorns it how.
Next time, I would still go to barbrix.
