Will be visiting Cleveland Clinic for a morning appt and figure we will finish about noon - 1 p.m. Any recs in the area for an interesting lunch or between the Clinic and the mall in Beachwood? Thanks Hounds!

    1. I assume you mean either Beachwood Place or Legacy Village. I also assume you mean the main campus of the Cleveland Clinic. The Cleveland Clinic is everywhere. In fact, there's a big clinic building right next to Beachwood Place.

Moxie is about 2 miles away and it's only five minutes because Beachwood Place and Moxie are both right by consecutive exits on 271. Moxie is a great restaurant. I usually go for dinner so I can't recommend food off the lunch menu but it's one of the best restaurants in the area.

Flying Cranes is about 1.5 miles due south of your route. A small menu of excellent Japanese food. They just added backyard patio dining which I haven't seen yet personally. The curry udon is fantastic. The pork cutlet with curry is also fantastic.

Vienna is about a mile in the opposite direction of your route but it's fairly close to the Clinic. They have the best corned beef in Cleveland. You'll have to buy it by the pound, assemble your own sandwich and eat it standing over the trunk of your car but I'd never let that stop me. They also have decent, fresh rye bread. Mustard, salads, cheese. It's so much better than anything else I've had around here that it's definitely worth the hassle.

Pacific East has the best sushi in the area. They also have some excellent Malaysian food. (If you want cooked Japanese food, definitely go to Flying Cranes even thought their menu is smaller.) I love the rojak. Many of the soups are excellent. The fried noodles... The tofu with seafood has fresh seafood and house made tofu. Chicken curry... The roti is great.

And if it is more convenient - you can go to the Pacific East branch at the Eton Mall in Pepper Pike/Beachwood - no Malaysian food, but terrific sushi and other Japanese food.

      2. Cedarlands Deli is very near the Clinic. Great combination of traditional deli food and middle eastern food offerings. No website, but here's some info:

          1. Yes, I mean the main Cleve Clinic at E 93rd St. & Euclid. We want to go to the Beachwood Mall that has SFA and Nordstrom afterward (will need some retail therapy).

Assume we will just go east on Cedar Rd. Is Corky & Lenny's still there? Any other good Jewish deli you can recommend? Sorry, but sushi and curry are not appealing. I believe we will drive right past the Italian neighborhood in Cleveland as well, any recs for lunch there? Thanks!

              1. re: Diane in Bexley

Corky's isn't there anymore. That entire mall is no longer there. It's a pile of rubble right now. Corky's moved long before that happened. The new location is actually pretty close to Moxie so it's also about two miles from Beachwood Place. I'd say the corned beef at Corky's is good but not nearly as consistent as Vienna. Of course, if you don't want to eat in your car or you do want a bowl of chicken soup then Vienna isn't an option.

Jack's Deli is on Cedar and Green - that might be the ticket you are looking for! I much prefer it to C&L. Nicer people and better food, IMHO. Decent soup, good sandwiches and excellent smoked fish items. And respectable house made knishes.

Also, noted Cleveland Chef Michael Hershman has taken over operations at Melange, which is in the little strip mall right next to Beachwood Place; more expensive and upscale than Jacks, but reputed to be good (I haven't tried it yet).

To get Italian, you'd want to detour north to Mayfield Road - there are several mom and pop Italian places between Green Road and 271.

Thanks Nancy! Jack's sounds like the kind of place we don't have in Columbus, Ohio. Looking forward to a good corned beef on rye with matzo ball soup. If we stay for dinner after shopping, we will try Melange. Appreciate your help!

diane as recommended above you might consider MOXIE too after shopping. i've only been there once myself and enjoyed it, but also the chef emailed me in the past and i helped set up a nyc chow intinerary for he and his staff. so i know they take the staff on chow trips and keep right up to date with whats going on elsewhere -- that's always a good sign!

                              1. re: mrnyc

Diane - I agree with MrNYC - if Moxie isn't too far out of the way - it is most worth trying for dinner - this I can say from having eaten there. I only know Melange by reputation, which has gone up and down; don't know who is in the kitchen now, just that Hershman is running the operation. Though I can't imagine it not being good with Hershman in the house.

                              2. re: NancyH

Nancy, thanks for your help! We had dinner Sun eveniing at Crop on W 6th St as we stayed in downtown Cleve. They have a fixed price $25 3 course dinner on Sun evenings which was very nice. We had corned beef and soup at Jack's after our appt yesterday, which was a treat as there are no good delis in Columbus. We did not stay for dinner.

Thanks for the report Diane - we are planning to try the Crop Sunday Supper this week with an out-of-town friend!
