The issue of wine list headings has been recurrent in this board.
However, I don't recall a case with more, let's say, flourish, than Gregg Greenbaum's recent production for Laurent Quenioux's brand new Bistro LQ.

These are the chapters (I arbitrarily selected a representative from each):

"Love and Passion"
2007 Michel Quenioux Domaine De Veilloux Cheverny (Loire, FR) 35

"First Date"
2008 Demoiselles Coiffees Rosé (Côte du Ventoux, FR) 28

"Sexy and Flirt"
NV Luis Pato Bruto Espumante (Bieras, PT) 36

"Celebration and Idare"
2005 Les Comtes de Cahors (Cahors, FR) 30

Wines in that price range tend to be aimed more at the casual rather than the serious wine drinker. I think that the sense of humor will help him sell wines to those who tend to be intimidated by a "serious" wine list. And it shouldn't be any hinderence to anyone who is "into" wine.

Well, he's in no danger of making his list more comprehensible to wine novices.

At the top it says 'Chef Quenioux has decided to classify the list based on "moments of life and feelings."'

What moment of life and feeling is "Wines by the Glass"? Maybe that's the happy hour moment.

I think it's ridiculous.

You think to much!
Each chapter includes three wines by the glass for $15. Verify your information before waisting your time...
Then if "serious" wine means "expensive" you simply get all wrong and should improve you wine education.

Serious wine drinker is what I wrote. This type of wine list will not intimidate a serious wine drinker (it might irritate the serious wine snob) and might even bring a chuckle or two. However, as I said, the price range for a wine list is not one that is aimed at the serious wine drinker/collector/affectionado. True serious wine drinkers enjoy inexpensive wines, but I doubt that the list is aimed at them but rather at the more casual wine drinker.

John Elkhay, out of Providence, does pretty cheesy wine list headings, also. Here's the link:

I hope that I am not breaking any rules by replying to some comments posted in this thread. If I have, I apologize in advance.

First, I'd like to thank you for your interest in our restaurant and specifically, our wine program. Our wine list was developed with the idea that wine and food are complementary and not mutually exclusive. The sum is greater than the parts, so to speak. The list was created with a desire to find wines that can be categorized under the "natural wine" philosophy. Whenever possible we prefer growers following biodynamic, sustainable practices and organic farming. If you are not sure of what I mean by "natural wine", I suggest you check out www.organicwinejournal.com. While not every wine on the list meets this definition, it none the less remains a guiding force.

Our price range does reflect a lower price point than many. Our hope is that the contents of the list rather than the price will perk the interest of wine aficionados. In my opinion, pricing should not be used to judge the merits or integrity of wine list.

LQ is behind the concept of the "categories" you see on the website. The website was developed prior to opening in late July. The "in-house" list is organized by wine type: sparkling, white, red & sweet. We have about 20 selections by the glass. I used LQ's themes to create wine flights. Unfortunately, we have not had an opportunity to update the website.

I hope this helps to answer some of the points raised.

Cheers!

Gregg,
Thanks for your post.
I was about to say, the in-house list looks quite different from the one on-line.

(BTW, It was clear from the start that LQ was behind the "categories"... that's the between-the-lines statement in "production for Laurent Quenioux's " )
