Riazzi's? Or other recs in Tempe

We are heading down to Tempe on Sunday to see Wicked at Gammage. Any recs for dinner before the show? I read a brief review in the Republic recently about Riazzi's but a search on the board turned up nothing. Has anyone eaten there recently who can recommend it? Any other recommendations/suggestions would also be appreciated.

  1. Any reason in particular you're considering Riazzi's?

My only experience there was many years ago when we lived right around the corner from the restaurant. Overall, the food was largely unremarkable (except for a remarkably weak dessert). To me, the food at Caffe Boa stood head and shoulders and belly button above that at Riazzi's.

I don't know if Boa offers what you are looking for, but it is open on Sunday and is very close to Gammage.

    1. I second Hohokam's rec for Caffe Boa. I've been going there for almost a decade now, and have never been disappointed. They have a delicious selection of pastas, salads, seafood, and steak.

Also, there's a new pizza place and wine bar on Mill Ave. Forgot the name.

      I would skip Riazzi's. It's nothing special.

You are thinking of La Bocca Pizzeria, which I also recommend. Caffe Boa never disappoints, though.

Also on Mill is Pho Thang Long, which has excellent pho, but the ambience is "downscale ethnic." And I know it's a chain, but I still love Z'Tejas.

      2. Riazzi's is okay neighborhood "red sauce" Italian. Okay, but not really walkable to/from Gammage and not really a destination restaurant.

The suggestions above are all on target: Boa, La Bocca, and Pho Thang Long are all good choices within walking distance of Gammage. Park once or take light rail to Mill Ave. Either way, you can proceed directly from dinner to Gammage. By the way, I actually find PTL to be more upscale in decor than the typical strip mall pho-teria.

        1. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm not married to Riazzi's by any means; I happened to see a mini-review of it in the paper and hadn't heard of it, so I ran it by my husband and he said he last ate there years ago and he remembers it being pretty good.

Caffe Boa's online menu looks good so I will run that by DH and see what he thinks. I am already all for it just b/c they claim to have award-winning tiramisu!
