Quick WI Trip - Door County, Green Bay, Waupaca Updates?
Driving from MKE to Green Bay for a game - anything super special & fun close to or in GB? Fine to go with the Packer theme - does not need to be upscale :) We're staying somewhere in West GB. Driving after game to Egg Harbor-ish for 1 night, so a dinner & a breakfast. Then Egg Harbor to Waupaca for 2 nights. Definitely want to go back to Simpson's - especially for those pickled mushrooms! We've eaten some other places I don't recall as particularily memorable, but any breakfast, lunch or dinner suggestions gratefully accepted. Casual is fine - I'm not expecting Le Etoile or Sanford's! Will then haul back to MKE for a quick lunch with my MIL (3 guesses it will be the Packing House...) before our flight back to LA.

Well, my husband got the flu & ended up in the Waupaca Hospital (which is very nice btw :), so not a whole lot of dining occurred. In Door, I did a drive up to Sisters Bay & back by myself & did get in a delicious vanilla frozen custard at Not Licked Yet, and two slices of cherry pie, so I guess I can't complain. So, still no pickled mushroom nirvana, but thanks, everyone - maybe next trip!

re: crowlk
Wow, crowlk, that's quite a list. Looking for a lunch in GB enroute from Door County to Waupaca - is Mario's Cafe Mario? I googled them & can't find the hours anywhere. Or another lunch suggestion?
Still looking for a 2nd dinner in Waupaca, other than Simpsons (which I'm hoping is still as good as I remember from 4ish years ago... I'm obsessed with their pickled mushrooms!)
-
re: torta basilica
In regards to Waupaca, Simpsons still does a really nice job, and yes they still have the pickled mushrooms. Other places to check out would be the Waupaca Country Club, they have changed hands in the last year and are quite good. I would also recommend the Wheel House, not just for their pizza but the sandwiches are really good, and they also make their own pickled mushrooms. If you are looking for somewhere for breakfast/lunch, I would highly recommend taking a drive to the Frontier in Amherst, they bake their own breads, and they make one of the best Rueben sandwiches you'll ever have.
If you have any other central Wisconsin questions let me know.

re: David Z
I don't regard Waupaca as a great chow town, but for vacationland ambience it can't be beat. Simpson's is a good choice for solid supper club fare and a friendly and gregarious bar crowd - weekends, anyway. I'll second the Wheelhouse for good casual dining, and if it's nice out, the deck beneath the red pines is one of the best places to waste an afternoon or evening. One place nobody's mentioned is TW Murphy's downtown, an Irish-themed grotto with a diverse menu and a spectacular choice of microbrews on tap. The host (owner?) is ridiculously friendly and accomodating. Have fun in our neck of the woods, hey, and go Pack!

Hi TB--
I dont know if this is something you'd be up for or not....Just outside of Sturgeon Bay is an unincorporated speck on the map called Carlsville. The Carlsville Roadhouse is exactly that (I have played gigs there with several different blues bands over the years) and their food is wonderful, especially the deep-fried lobster. And no matter what kind of pie they have for dessert, save room for a piece; it is heaven on a fork.
