Venezuelan food in DC?

I moved from Boston to DC 4 years ago and am still searching for a restaurant to take the place of my all-time favorite, La Casa de Pedro in Watertown, Massachusetts. (For anyone heading to the Boston metro area, I STRONGLY recommend a detour through Watertown to sample Pedro's FANTASTIC food!!!! http://www.lacasadepedro.com/).

Anyone have any tips for me on a good DC equivalent?

Go to La Caraquena for the tequenones and the domino arepas. They also have reina papeada here which is a good, not great choice. The shredded beef is wet, tough, and salty - like most renditions. Black bean soup is very good. Other good dishes are not Venezuelan, like the saltenas or the sopa de mani. A mix of Bolivian, Chilean, and Venezuelan dishes.

the menu isnt as extensive, but the only place that I know of that serves Venezuelan food is La Caraquena in Falls Church. The arepas are best fried (as opposed to grilled), though I haven't come across a filling that i like all that much yet. The saltenas (not Venezuelan, I know) are incredible, as is the salsa verde.

I've heard good things about the soups, but haven't had any myself.

Check out their website, it has the menu.

Yup, La Caraquena is the best you're going to do around here. Good place.
