St. John's NFLD Restaurant reviews
Just a brief review of some of our favorite St. John's and NFLD restaurants and food purveyors from our recent trip.
Bianca's - We have dined at Bianca's every summer for at least 10 years. The restaurant has long been a standard setter on the St. John scene. Our recent visit did not meet our expectations. Bianca's uses local and NFLD produce and seafood in their french influenced menu to great effect. Lobster, duck, crab, cod, halibut, salmon and venison are typical entrees. However, my lamb dish was overpowered by garlic and parlsley. Table service was inattentive and slow. We waited for wine glasses for the dinner pour till food was already on the table. The service was not horrible, just not up to the usual standard and certainly not worth $100 a plate.
Get Stuffed - Once you get past the goofy name this place has potential to be a great restaurant. But there is room for improvement. The braised short ribs are excellent but for our dinner they were served over soupy mashed potatoes that could pass for vichyoisse. The panzanella salad was literally 90% bread and 10% peppers and mozzarella. The seafood pasta was very well received. Excellent wine selections at $25 a bottle.
Georgetown Bakery - This place has the best bagels I have had out side of Montreal. Dense, chewy and vaguely malty. Worth the trip but call first to make sure they are open. They close at 2:00 PM and are closed Sundays, Mondays and whenever they feel like it. And they don't care if you are inconvenienced. Excellent croissants, baguette and rye bread.
Bonus Feature - If in Brigus, don't miss the blueberry ice-cream at the ice cream store attached to the antiques place. Very blueberry and not to sweet. A revelation.
Brigus has the best blueberry desserts in the most unexpected places. The blueberry crisp from the little restaurant attached to the souvenir shop is the best i've ever had. Their seafood chowder was also excellent.
Curious however, over your review of Bianca's. Why write a place off over one bad evening, when all of your other experiences have been good ?
