El Almacen-- very good but check your bill!

I had a _delightful_ time eating my heart out at El Almacen recently-- even my snooty Bay Area friend put one bite of the short rib dish in her mouth and pronounced it her favorite new York restaurant. There were 6 of us and we tried a good percentage of the menu, with wine, and we were so happy. Its was quiet, the ambiance perfect, the waitstaff very handsome, etc. Great dining experience, right? The check comes and its $475!! We take out the cellular calculator and find the bill was no less than $200 off. The corrected bill was $254.

!! huge discrepancy!

The worst part is that they weren't even that apologetic. I mean, we really wanted to believe it was an honest mistake, but they didn't give us any reason to. It ruined the evening so much! So anyway, go here, enjoy, but check the arithmetic.

i've been here twice now and it is my new favorite restaurant in williamsburg. the avocado fries are incredible. the hamachi ceviche was great. i also liked the mixta. but the outdoor patio area took the cake - so relaxing on a sunny saturday. they now have all different types of sangria and a wine list.

Not So Chubby, that's what I'm wondering. I'm suspicious the waitress was trying pull a fast one on us-- maybe thinking we were drunk and jovial enough to just drop our credit card down and not check the math? Regardless I'm still recommending the place, but just warning the eating community that this place isn't good with the calculator, and isn't ashamed of it.

I'm guessing they itemized the bill for you... if so, what did they add to it made the bill come out to be $200 higher than it should have been?

Nothing, it was a dramatic miscalculation-- they weren't trying to charge us for something we didn't buy, there was just some (very) faulty math.
