What happened? Just a move up the coast or something else going on?

  1. They moved up PCH to Crystal Cove. There's also a location in Irvine Spectrum.

    1. And don't think it's the same - it's not. Much louder, more expensive & food quality has gone downhill.

Couldn't agree more. Having seen crowds pouring into this Crystal Cove restaurant whenever I am in the area (usually eating at the excellent Bluefin sushi restaurant), we decided to try it for dinner tonight. It was packed as usual. The food was really poor, and the service awful. The cocktails were mediocre. The tortilla chips were almost surely from a bag, the salsa only tasted of pepper, and was watery. The other foods we had ranged from mediocre to poor (chimichanga was greasy and although hot on the outside, contents were cold; enchiladas were tasteless, rice and beans were not quite as good as those served at Mexican fast food joints. And the prices are high! But the place was packed!! Sure the setting is pretty, but I absolutely can't understand why anyone would go there to eat. It must be something other than the food...or is there something about this place that I'm missing?

You don't go there for the food, and you don't go there for the drinks; you go there for rich pickings on the MILF front.

Seriously, I can't imagine what draws people there.

I guess this place is either loved or hated; it is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants (I noticed others listed it as a pick for the 2009 CH poll) and I'm certainly not interested in MILF. I don't like the new location or crowd as well as when they were in Laguna, so I go in off hours to avoid the Newport Coast/Housewives trash. My experiences have been the complete opposite- always good service, great margaritas and love the chips and salsa. I usually order the carnitas or a combo of NY steak, mole chicken enchilada and taquito-yum! My friends LOVE the seafood enchiladas. BTW, I will go into the scariest hole-in -the -wall in Santa Ana, "gringo" Mi Casa or just about any Mexican restaurant that has good food.

Thanks, Das. Looking at the crowd there, that was my impression...but I guess I needed confirmation.

I am surprised that BubblyOne has apparently has had a different experience there. Aside from the sunset view which was beautiful, there was nothing about the place we liked...drinks, chips, dip, food, service were all between mediocre and poor.
