Spruce Beer

ChewFun Jul 17, 2009 10:33 AM

I'm sure that this is impossible, but I will ask anyway. Is there any place in the area where one can get Spruce Beer?

Oh man, we had Spruce Tips beer in Haines, Alaska and it was wonderful. I'd love to find something like that around here !

The beer I am talking about is a soda made from Spruce needles and bark. It is very good and native to Montreal. I'm sure I can't find it anywhere within 100 miles, but I would love to get some.

Yeah, it's totally different. It doesn't taste like a relative to root beer. First, it is as clear as water. Second it is sweet but also dry. It tastes like spruce smells. My wife and others think it tastes like pine-sol - which sounds icky. There is no ickiness to it. It is a very accessible taste, unlike something like Switzerland's Rivella (which I also like). It is something that could be widely popular, but isn't.

Yeah, exactly. If you describe it, it doesn't sound super good, but it is. Hey, we have Birch Beer and Ginger Beer and Root Beer. If you think about it, it doesn't sound so good. Birth Beer tastes nothing like Spruce Beer. As an adult, Spruce beer is the best of the bunch since it isn't heavy and is even dry.

Fortunately, you will have to make a trip to Montreal to find out. It is a great city with some great chow.

I just had spruce beer in Montreal about 3 weeks ago. I didn't like the first sip but then it grew on me and now I want some. I found this link to order it online.
