It doesn't taste like a relative to root beer. First, it is as clear as water. Second it is sweet but also dry. It tastes like spruce smells. My wife and others think it tastes like pine-sol - which sounds icky. There is no ickiness to it. It is a very accessible taste, unlike something like Switzerland's Rivella (which I also like). If you think about it, it doesn't sound so good. Birth Beer tastes nothing like Spruce Beer. As an adult, Spruce beer is the best of the bunch since it isn't heavy and is even dry.
