Bar Tartine dinner, nice!
I had dinner tonight (7/16/09) at Bar Tartine and had an excellent time. Very nice casual bistro type atmosphere. I had a refreshing house-made grapefruit soda that was delicious with the Tartine bread and butter. For a starter I tried the Chicken liver pate and it was excellent with toasted bread, grainy mustard, pickled red onion and nice arugula salad. For the main course I had the hanger steak (med rare) with warm bread salad, roasted cherry tomatoes and haricots verts. So good and a nice glass of Bordeaux (Ch. Parenchere, $9.50) was an excellent pairing. I even had room for dessert called Affogato, which was a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream in a cone glass with a double shot espresso poured overneath at the table. Yum. Total with tax and tip was $75 and a bargain for the quality.
Sadly, the Scoop and various other sources are reporting that chef Fox will be leaving Bar Tartine in a month, after 2 years there. I really appreciated the balance the food had between complex prep and top-notch ingredients that were enhanced rather than muffled by his techniques. The old chef from Slow Club/Serpentine, Kronner, will take over. The way the new menu is described, it looks like it will be a Serpentine/Range/Maverick clone, which bugs me. We already have enough examples of that type of restaurant, which I like, but don't want to go to every time I go out.
Anybody tried Bar Tartine since Nick Balla took over? Apparently he's brought some Hungarian influences. Menus are currently offline and the place will be closed most of this coming week.
