Bars with Steam Tables - Times Square Area

  • 5

We used to go to the Blarney Stone near MSG where there was a steam table/sandwich station you could get a corned beef sandwich, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese and like. That has since closed, but I know there must be other restaurants of this ilk in town.

Me and the Mrs. will be in the Times Square area this weekend and need the name of a few places.

I know there's a ton of great, fancy, 5 star type of places in NYC, but that's not us. We're jean wearing, food loving, meat and potatoes folks.

  1. I grew up eating in those type of places and still have a soft spot for them. Some have closed down but a number remain. Here's a map -

There was a time in my young life when eating at a Blarney Stone was the height of gastronomic excellence.

      Ah, to good times <sigh>.

When I was in my 20s these were a regular haunt at lunch and after work. In the winter the front windows would steam up until it was impossible to see either in or out. The smell of brisket and ham and beer hit you like a wall when you went in. In the 70s these were as plentiful as Duane Reades and I used them as refueling stations. It makes me glad to see that some are still around.

Some updated information. I sent a friend that Google map of the Blarney Stones and he reported back that some had closed. You may want to check out Yelp for fresh reviews and when in doubt, call ahead.

And the one marked on Park Avenue has actually been called Desmond's for as long as I can remember.
