Good eats near the Mod Club?

My group is looking for a decent place for dinner that is within walking distance from the Mod Club. Cuisine doesn't matter, as long as it is delicious, with some veggie options and they have a decent bar. I'm not too familiar with the area, but I'm assuming there are probably some half decent italian restaurants around - I just don't know where to begin. Any suggestions welcome! Price doesn't matter too much, as long as it's not astronomical. Thanks in advance!

  1. I'll start you off with Chiado or it's less expensive relative Senhor Antonio Tapas and Wine Bar.

    1. What's your demographic? And how big is this group?

Chiado is high-end (main dining room perhaps a bit stuffy, although the wine bar is more casual). Sidecar is very good but less formal (excellent bartending, great patio). Wine Bar Giancarlo is quite nice (small plate menu, but bigger appetites can order from the main menu at Trattoria Giancarlo... mostly wine at the bar, very sexy room). Utopia is cheap and cheerful but not much of a bar. Same goes for Negroni Panini.

Which small plates would you recommend at WIne Bar Giancarlo, Rabbit?

Dunno if these recs are consistent with the current menu, but the piadina is a little flatbread pizza that is tasty and good for sharing... the fish grill is simple and lovely... I liked the crab and barley risotto, but it's a subtle flavour and a comfort food-ish dish that might be a little winter-y for this time of year. The molten chocolate cake has a salted caramel sauce and it's super-great. Wine list is is a bit pedestrian for a wine bar, but it's not expensive, but you can order from Giancarlo's amazing cellar if you want something special (same goes for food, if you want more than small plates they'll bring you the trat's main menu).

I'm cautious of overselling this place since the food is quite good but not earth-shattering... but I don't want to sound blase either because I think this is a really pretty room with nicely prepared and fairly priced fare, and staff who have been more than accommodating on our visits. I think it's a grown-up and welcome addition to the strip.

The menu is small, but it's well considered (and you can order from Giancarlo's menu if you're really hungry and want a full meal).

thanks for your comments & recs, Rabbit.

I understand completely what you mean about being cautious of overselling. I'm cautious of the same thing. Some of my recs for certain foods have been criticized as "nothing special" or "not worth a special trip", but often something simple, done competently, while not being outstanding or the best in its class, is enough for me, esp. in a neighbourhood like Little Italy or Greektown where it's easy to end up with something disappointing!

      2. Utopia Cafe & Grill! One of our favourite go-to spots for years and they've never let us down. Casual but nice vibe, varied menu, great beers, nice back patio, friendly staff. It's about a 5 min walk east from the Mod Club on the north side of College between Clinton and Manning.

Love Utopia. Definitely a good place to eat (great patio) and many, many veggie options.

Vivoli has decent wood-oven pizza, to please both the vegetarians and meat eaters. Vecchio Frak as well. Both places are relaxing and fairly priced.

          2. Kalendar is a good option. Pretty interesting selection of bar drinks and a nice casual hang-out place. Food is pretty good. But I really enjoy the atmosphere there. Only problem could be potentially that you may have to wait a while for a table, as they don't take reservations.
