Decent Food around Helen, GA?

Gator Tom Jul 14, 2009 10:00 AM

Family trip planned this week for ATL and North GA/Helen area. Need a few meal recs for the Helen part of our trip/stay. Any good BBQ (esp. pulled pork) in the area? Are any of the nearby wineries worth the visit? If so, how are their restaurants? Any help would be appreciated.

Most of the restaurants in Helen are German-themed...about two years ago I remember enjoying the sweet potato fries at Altstader (across the street from a busy bakery) and the sausage plate. The pumpkin fudge from the candy shop downtown is delicious, too (but may only be a seasonal thing). I don't remember seeing any BBQ places when we went, though.

My favorite place in that area is the Edelweiss German Country Inn & Restaurant by far. It is about 5 to 10 mins outside of Helen and owned by a wonderful German family. The food is much better than that in town. If you are looking for somewhere to stay also, this is the place. http://www.edelweissgermaninn.com/

We enjoyed a very good German meal at Vines/Edelweiss. Particularly liked the potato pancakes, schnitzels and spaetzle. Thanks for the suggestion.

Happy you enjoyed your meal. They are really a nice family and the grounds are wonderful.

Couldn't find any pumpkin fudge - suspect it's seasonal - but thanks for the reply.
