Where is the best Black Forest Cake or Coconut Cream Pie/Strawberry Shortcake?
Your help is required. My wife is having a birthday and every year I go out and I buy fancy smancy cakes and nothing really seems to do the trick.
I know this may be retro but sometimes what is tried and true is....BEST!
I am in Etobicoke but will go elsewhere if need be.
Thanks in Advance.
The coconut cream pie at Scaramouche is decadence overload. It's not fancy, but it sure is big and wonderful. Lots of good custard, shaved coconut and tons of whipped cream and white chocolate shavings on top. I think it's pretty expensive to buy a whole pie, but for your wife's birthday, it just may do the trick. :)
Have you tried the LaRocca Strawberry Shortcake? It is the only one I can ever consistently find and has lots of whipped cream and strawberries. Although now that Strawberries are in season, maybe you could whip one up yourself. :)
They also offer a Black Forest Cake but I have never tried it.
The best Black Forest Cake I have ever had was from a little bakery in Richmond Hill, called Levendale Bakery - they often make them and freeze them, so ordering in advance and requesting a fresh one might be in order.
The only other Black Forest Cake I can even think of is Dimpfelmeir, which is in Etobicoke.
Coconut Cream - I cannot help you with, I don't like it, but I can say that I found Queen of Tarts Banana Cream a let down, so I can't recommend them.
Maybe the best way to go is get the best you can find of each and hopefully one of the 3 will be a hit! ;)
Just in case others are looking for Black Forest Cake, I saw them yesterday at McEwan at Don Mills & Lawrence. Didn't try one, but if anyone does, maybe you could let us know if it's a winning cake.
Sweet Indulgence near Coxwell and O'Connor has a delicious white cake with a layer of fresh strawberries in the middle. Not a traditional Strawberry Shortcake, but wonderful!
