Monterey Park Chinese To Go

a

We will be driving through Monterey Park, on the way back from Phoenix on Saturday and would like to order some Chinese to go. We would prefer a restaurant no to far off of the 10 freeway. We are adventurous eaters game for anything except pork. Authentic Chinese would be our preference over something like Paul's Kitchen. Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Not Chinese, but right off the 10 freeway east at Fremont literally 50 yds from the freeway is a donut shop that has these fantastic mini-cream puffs (custard or cream filled). They seem to show up at all these Asian events I go to. They don't make them there, they come frozen and they thaw them out and sprinkle them with powdered sugar. About $4/dozen.

As soon as you get off at Fremont it's on the left in a little strip mall with a 7-11.

You might want to also check out Yum Cha Cafe, it's two blocks south of the 10 freeway on Atlantic right next to the Shun Fat Market (south side door). It's on the way to Sam Woo BBQ. Basically a take out dim sum place, but they have tables inside and outside if you want to eat your dim sum there.

I think they've earned the Chowhound seal of approval for "cheap" dim sum to go (many items starting at 99 cents/order) and they have other things to go like white chicken and rice for like $3.99. One of the Chowhound favorites is the brown sugar rice cakes.

I think the busiest restaurant for to-go is Sam Woo BBQ in Monterey Park. I think they do more to go business than in restaurant dining.

Fairly close to the 10 freeway and Atlantic Blvd.

          Monku:

Thanks for the heads up. Any not to be missed dishes?

You said no pork so I'm embarassed to say, but my favorite to go thing there is the steamed pork hash--$2.75 for a huge square when they got it, put it on top of some rice it's the meal for me.
Otherwise they do a good job with noodles.
They're noted for their roast duck (don't ask me why-they call it Peking duck), everyone seems to order it either as a side dish, on rice or in won ton soup.

Definitely steps above Paul's Kitchen and I get a hankering for PK's once in a while and go to the one downtown...which I always thought was better than the one in MP.
