Hi fellow chowhounders,
I am looking for recommendations for a Cuban restaurant to cater my upcoming 40th birthday party. Am looking for something authentic, delicious and not too expensive. I will probably have around 40 guests. Thanks in advance for your help!

i heard the guy from 90 Miles (Alberto Gonzalez) is thinking of offering a catering option... now that he/they opened a larger kitchen over on Armitage. i haven't been to the new location, but the small joint on Clybourn is definitely delicious and certainly inexpensive.

Try Papi's on Milwaukee ave. just north of Belmont. They are a small and relatively new restaurant. They have great cubans and other authentic dishes.I believe they cater also. The address is 3334 N, Milwaukee phone# 773-777-3300. Also cafe Laguardia on Armitage has always been good .

I hope i's not too late. I am Cuban and have lived in Chicago for many years. I have not kept up with new restaurants, but there are 2 places I have used for catering.

The restaurants are not for vegetarians, and meat dishes are their strengths (ropa vieja, pork/lechon, picadilo, etc.), Both restaurants are authentic, but a little high on carbs (rice, yucca, plaintains). They are even better than some Miami typical restaurants (Versailles, La Carreta), The prices are reasonable - so it will not stress your budget. We visit each 3-5 times per year. You might want to do your own salad on the side.

El Rinconcito Cubano, On Fullerton near Sawyer (32xx West Fullerton).

La Unica Grocery, just east of Ashland on Devon Ave, La Unica is moving to a broader Latin American menu. The flan is excellent, not heavy Mexican style. It also has excellent coffee and an assortment of Latino products.
