Will be visiting Manhattan later this week. My wife and i often prefer to share an entree. Do most moderately priced restaurants do this without an extra charge?

Thanks!

Shared Plate, as opposed to Split Plate could mean different things to different people. Just sharing an entree may or may not result in an extra plate charge depending on what else has been ordered, e.g. appetizer-soup-salad.......but if you expect the kitchen to split the plate with vegetable and starch included on each plate, I would imagine you should definitely expect to be charged for a split plate fee.

If you provide the actual restaurants you are considering, maybe someone can give you more specifics to policies.

Presuming you mean the main course is brought to the table along with an empty plate, and it's left for the two of you to divvy things up.... Occasionally, you will find a restaurant that puts a note on the menu re: a sharing charge for main courses. However, in most cases, you will need to inquire. When it comes to Italian restaurants, we've never been to any that charged us when we've split a pasta, whether we've ordered it to begin the meal or as a main course. And, btw, the pasta is always split and plated in the kitchen.

i share plates all the time, and i've never been charged for it in NYC...but i've never specifically asked for the portion to be split, but rather just said we'd be sharing the entree...sometimes in fancier places (e.g. Scarpetta) they will serve it on two plates without being asked, other times they just put in the center and provide smaller eating places -- it doesn't make much difference to me...but generally when i've shared an entree with someone, it's because we've ordered plenty of appetizers (and likely wine), so the restaurant would have no reason to feel slighted monetarily...

i think the popularity of tapas, tapas-inspired small plates, and Asian cuisine (and it's sharing norm) has made charging for shared entrees mostly a thing of the past...

Thanks for the responses...it doesn't matter to me whether its plated in the kitchen, or we're simply brought an extra plate. Some mof the places we are considering are the Smith, Red Head. Belcourt, Back 40, Spritzer's Corner, Clinton Street Baking, Mary's Fish Camp, Trecolori, Breeze, Hell's Kitchen.
