Places for an Engagement dinner?

My sister's fiance's family is more of the meat-n-potatoes type... so i'm looking for suggestions for an american restaurant in the Northern VA area. We're in Annandale, but can do Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church. Not looking for a super-expensive fancy place-- ~20 dollars a plate is about the cap limit.

Although I, too, think that the GAR group would fit your needs, it's my understanding that all of the GAR restaurants do not seat until the whole table has arrived and they do not have private rooms -- although some will reserve a section with some advance planning. How many are going to be attending?

Overwood in Old Town has more nooks and crannies, as well as a room that holds about 30 or so, and would be in your price & taste range.

One of the Great American Restaurants? Not Carlyle since that might exceed your prices but my parents are very meat and potatoes, while my husband and I are more adventurous, and so they are generally a good compromise for us. Artie's in Fairfax, Mike's or Sweetwater Tavern.
