Street & Co - Good, Not Great
We just had dinner at Street & Co after not having dined there in quite some time. We have always thought that they had the best seafood in Portland and recommended it to family and friends numerous times. Our meal tonight was good, but far from outstanding. We had the roasted cod special, topped with diced tomatoes and chorizo sausage, and a side of mussel and clam bread pudding. The cod tasted fresh, and was cooked perfectly, but was overpowered by the chopped sausage and extremely salty. The bread pudding was interesting -- the clams and mussels were terrific, but the egg and bread tasted very bland after several bites. All and all the dinner was not up to the standard that we had come to expect.
The service was very disappointing. We watched as persons at the surrounding tables, who were seated well after us, were served as we waited, and waited. When my husband politely inquired about when we would be served, the waitress got very snippy, saying that our meal was probably delayed by the pasta dish ordered by one in our party. Why would pasta delay the meal?? The dish was mussels over pasta -- nothing that would justify the 1 1/4 hrs we waited for the meal. We thought that maybe our single glass of wine would be comped for the extended wait, but no, nothing was taken off the bill. We won't rush to return. We will continue to return to our never fail favorites: Caiola's, Bresca's, and 555.
Maina: good point. My wife feels the same but I really like St. & Co. if you can get a good waiter...... I ask for the bread to be warmed up, and some waiters will do it, and some will not. I get the sole in the frying pan and love it, but they are not doing the business they used to do because you can get a reservation usually within 3-4 days.
