Hungarian Restaurants:

I'm always searching for authentic delicious Hungarian food so I asked my Hungarian buddy.

In reading this site I asked about MAXIMILIAN'S in North Hollywood and he told me its the new place of Chef Laszlo from Hortobagy, that its very pricey and the food is sour. He uses too much white wine in his cooking.

The best place now is Carolina's on Vine St. Hollywood.

Can anybody share some input on this spot Carolina's?

I'm curious.

Thanks,

Stuart

    Apparently, there is a Hungarian BBQ (WTF?) restaurant in Hollywood.

    The menu makes no sense to me.

          I think they open when there's nothing else to do that day. It's VERY spotty.

          For lunch they have a steam tray table you can select from. I had a delicious stuffed cabbage a while back. It was very filling, and I ended up taking some home. It's served with mashed potatoes.

        I haven't heard of Carolina's.

        BTW attached to this comment is a list of Hungarian restaurants -- the last two, Alpine Village and Old World sell Hungarian products.

        Have I missed any in Southern California?

          I know nothing about takeout products available at the Old World in Huntington Beach, but this is definitely not a Hungarian restaurant. It is German and as different from Hungarian as Sauerbraten is to Paprikash!

            Perhaps my hungarian friend said the name incorrectly, I'll get the accurate info for the board.

            My apologies,

            Stuart

              @josephnl

              Apparently, I wasn't clear enough for you.

              Hungarian restaurants and food:

              * Otto's Import Store & Delicatessen
              * Oxygen Lounge and Restaurant
              * Csardas Restaurant
              * Maximillian's

              German-esque delis and restaurants that sell some Hungarian products

              * Alpine Village
              * Old World

              Oxygen in Tarzana closed back in April.
              The menu that josephnl referred to was the one created by Marc Boussane, who preceded Laszlo in the kitchen. And Laszlo formerly cooked at Czardas before moving on to Maximilian's.
              Stuart - try Maximilian's and report back.
              Alpine Village definitely German, not Hungarian.

              I drive up and down Vine every day. I don't know about any Carolina's. Where is it? Csarda's is on Melrose near Vine. Is that what you're referring to?

                Stuart -
                here is the real Maxi menu, not the one shown elsewhere from menutopia which is about 10 years out of date, as are nearly all those menu pages websites. Once any chef leaves a place, the menu changes - do you think any website can keep up with every one of them:
                http://www.maxiatnoho.com/menu
                Now I have not eaten there so have no input on the sour/wine/ and related issues.
                Try it and let us know.

                  Just looked at the Maximilian menu and I see nothing on it that seems the least bit Hungarian. See: http://www.menutopia.com/GetMenu.m?ve...

                  Cannot find anything at all about Carolina's. Could someone please clue me in.

                  I would love a good Hungarian meal. Is there anywhere in southern CA where authentic Hungarian food is served. Oh what I wouldn't give for some of my grandmother's paprikash, gulyas, and strudels!

                    I wouldn't call Laszlo's cooking "sour." It tasted exactly as I remember from Hortobagy, and was not "pricey" either, what with virtually (if not all) dishes being priced under $20. Pricey compared to a taco stand, perhaps, but not for a real restaurant.
