Has anyone heard anything about Sandros relocating/rebuilding after the fire? We sure do miss this place....

    :( ME TOO!

    It's been too long.
Last tidbit I got, was from a friend driving by who said they were rebuilding / repairing the original space... although no news as to if Sando's is going back into it or not! I am fearful I will be moved away from Calgary before it's rebuilt, that would be tragic!

We've been eating at Sandros since the early 1990s - and it would be heartbreaking if they didn't rebuild. The atmosphere is fantastic and the food...well, if you've eaten there - you know!

        EXCITING!!!!

Just got off the phone with the owner, and they should be re open in just 3 short weeks!

Same location... but a little larger space, and a new name too. They have changed it to there family name. I won't insult anyone by trying to spell it!

        COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS!

Are they going to call it Rea's? I don't care what they call it, just happy they are coming back! Thanks for the great news, CookieGal!

Was there the other day for lunch...food is still outstanding. Nothing fancy, just good Italian food...however the service was horrible...1.5 hrs for two people who just had entrees. I know they just re-opened so will give them the benefit of the doubt. Calamari and Penne Arribiata always a safe (and good) choice.

their service has ALWAYS been horrible for small tables or young (> 30-ish) people. I could go on and on about this.... if you're a table of 2, you may as well be invisible. it's been that way for years.

and then there was the time when I took my boss and wife for dinner for his b-day. he is very well-educated, looks wealthy, is white, etc., and we had IMPECCABLE service. best i've ever had there.

but i just don't tip when they give me crap service. and, i haven't been back there in probablly 3 years because of this.

I have been there a few times before the fire. I never found a problem with the service. I am not one to ever be described as looking wealthy, nor did we ever visit with a large group. Not outstanding service; Nothing I would complain about either.

Wow.. I have never had any thing but bend over backwards outstanding service here!

Have been eating here for about 7 years, and fall into the under 30 crowd (at least for most of these years) I have always felt totally at home, welcomed, and treated like gold + the place is always packed!

I am sorry to hear that you have had different experiences :(

                  * you could just pretend your in New York... then the bad service and great food are par for the course!

you must be visiting in large groups. i've been literally ignored on several occasions while the servers (you know them all, they are family and have been working there forever) wait hand and foot on the larger groups. i realize they do this because they think the larger groups will tip better - and they probably do, because the ignore the smaller tables. i grew tired of such poor service that I stopped going altogether - and I lived about a 3 minute car ride from there. boo!

EDIT: I should note that Il Centro has equally terrible, or not worse, service. perhaps this is a cultural thing or something.

I had a similar experience. I don't mind waiting if I have some wine to sip but we didn't even get that. And yes, it was very clear which tables in the room the regular customers sat at.

Nonlinear, have you tried Boccavino? It's in that area, beside Lina's market. My boyfriend and I go there quite often and enjoy it. They serve a mix of pub food and Italian. It's kind of like an airy pub.

                        hi beachy1,

no, haven't tried it since I moved to Acadia and Il Centro is really close (although i've only been there twice because IMO the service is even WORSE than Sandro's). anyhow, thanks for the recommendation, maybe we'll swing in next time we're in the area! :)

Went by tonight - as noted above, food is as great as before. My fav dishes still on the menu. Shared the spaghetti carbonara and the linguine tutto mare.... I've missed the tutto mare!

Service was great. They were super busy but still very attentive and great sense of urgency. Spoke with the owners and they mentioned they had to bump up their staffing levels after re-opening because it is a bigger space and busier than before.

Overall glad to see they're back with the same great food and busier than ever!

EDIT: Oh and I should note with the debate about service only to regulars - I've only been at this place 5 times over the span of 2 yrs before they closed... definitely wouldn't be considered a regular. Each time I'd been in the past I'd had good experiences.

A friend and I dined here last night, it was my third time here, twice before when it was Sandro's. I cannot relate to anyone's comments on how "great" the food is. On the other hand the service was great. The food is basic italian home cooking and I guess if that's all you're looking for and expecting than it could be considered good. When I go out for a dinning experience I expect to have food that's going to be something more extraordinary than I can make at home and this is not the case with this restaurant. I do have to say I liked the new decor and the prices are still very reasonable. I'd also like to reply to Beachy1's comment on Boccavino's, very good little italian pub with very good food!

I went for the first time in December, the times I tried to go several times before (prior to the fire) they didn't have availability so I assumed it was a really awesome place, it was highly recommended but out of the way for me.

It was pretty good, but not really special, I thought Buon Giorno (my regular cheap italian go-to place) was better. Service was fine. I'd go again if convenient but not make a special trip to the area to go there.
