Best Sandwich?

I am looking for a good sandwich shop since I would like to have a picnic lunch. I will be driving to the loop area from the northwest suburbs. Does anyone have any recommendations? I would like to try something in the city since we don't come downtown often. We would like something interesting.

L'Appetito in the lower level of the Hancock building has great sandwiches.

L'Apetito is great - I know it is a chain now but Potbelly's which is a Lincoln Park original is makes an excellent -

If you're going to be in the Museum Campus/South Loop area, try Panozzo's here:

Jerry's sandwiches (2 locations) has just about every combination of sandwich imaginable.

I second Pastoral. It's in the Loop, it's got fantastic sandwhiches, and you can also get cheese (it's primarily a cheese shop) and other picnic stuff. If the picnic is in Grant Park or Millenium Park, it's practically across the street.

I did not realize that Pastoral was within walking distance of Millennium Park. I thought it was only a cheese place until I read your post. Thanks for your tip. I'll check it out.

Pastoral gets crazy busy especially during lunch. Order ahead of time if you can. There is a separate cash register by the cheese counter for pick ups only. I ordered 3 sandwiches Thursday to take on a 5 hour Amtrak train. Even giving them a half hour to make them before I left my office, I still had to wait another fifteen minutes!

And yes they are worth it!

Are the cheese plate combinations good?

Jerry's sandwiches are truly mind-blowing. My choice.

Jerry's is great and the owners are very nice people. I appreciate that they paid attention to their west loop location and went from just a 5 day a week lunch spot to having evening and weekend hours. And you can walk a block south to Monroe and eat in Skinner Park, the garden area is very nice!

For great traditional deli sandwiches, Perry's. They are closed on weekends, so depending on when you are coming, might be a moot point. I also like mountsac's rec on Vietnamese banh mi.

if you really want to be adventurous, try vietnamese sandwiches from the argyle neighborhood (ex. ba le bakery). i really like them.

the best sandwich i've had in chicago is in silver palm. they have this sandwich with three different kinds of pork (bacon, pork chop, and something else i forget) with a fried egg on top. simply a genius and awesome combination! though i'm not sure this is a good idea for a family picnic. just for future references i guess

A few ideas: Brown Sack on the 3700 block of West Armitage, Pastoral around Lake and Wabash and Fox & Obel on Illinois just west of Navy Pier. F&O would have the best selection in terms of sides and all. Pastoral would be my favorite in terms of quality. As much as I like Brown Sack, some of their sandwiches might not hold up long enough to survive a picnic.
