Road Trip Suggesions - NYC to Buffalo

Hi All! I would love to have some input. My brother and Dad are about to embark on a semi-cross country road trip starting in NYC and ending in Wichita, KS (with many stops along the way).

Any suggestions for the first leg of their trip from NYC to Buffalo? They are open to anything. The only set stop on this leg of their trip is Niagara Falls, they are traveling by way of 287 to 81N to 390N.

They are adventurous eaters who like local mom & pop places and regional foods.

The next leg of the trip is Buffalo to Detroit so if you have suggestions for that keep an eye out for the post on that board :) Thanks so much!!

    1. I'm a little confused about your proposed route. You say you are taking "287 (do you mean the Cross-Westchester across the Tappan Zee, or do you mean 287 in NJ?) to 81N" Neither 287 connects with 81N.
I live outside of Rochester and drive to NYC several times a year. If you are coming from Manhattan, I'd take the GW bridge to 80W, across the Del Water Gap, to 380N to 81N. On 81N there is a place called Bingham's Family Restaurant in the town of Lenox. It's about four hours from Manhattan and would be about the halfway point to Buffalo. It is nothing fancy. Just good and incredibly cheap food. They do their own baking on premises. The pies and breads are outstanding. My wife tells me the rice pudding is to die for. They don't serve alcohol.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was trying to keep the route short and sweet and only mention the main routes they were taking. They are actually leaving from Northern NJ.

        The extended cliffs notes version of their route is: I 80 W to I 380 N to I 81N to I 17 W to I 390 N to US 20 A to NY 400 N.

I discovered Binghams by accident several years ago. Nothing fancy, but good food and great pies. Also check out Dinosaur BBQ in downtown Rochester.
