I adore fantastic cheeses, and wish I could afford to eat them every day. The problem is, every place I have found that has a decently extensive selection (eg Better Cheddar and Whole Foods) charges exorbitant rates for them. Are there any shops in the greater Kansas City area that have a good variety of high quality cheese, but at more reasonable prices?

  1. Yikes, this is tough. Typically, if I ever want good cheese, I end up having to pay an arm and a leg for it, too. I think it's just a fact of life, but there certainly could be some bargains to be had. A suggestion for a good, mild, moderate-priced cheese would be d'Affinois. And most places will shave a couple bucks a pound if you buy a wheel or a half/wheel of it.

    1. If you're bargain shopping, I've seen some pretty good stuff at Costco

      1. Heatherkay is right. If you're concerned about pricing, Costco is the way to go. Unfortunately, they won't have anything regional, but there are lots of great imported choices and I have seen Maytag blue, for instance, if you want something domestic. The KC, Mo location on Linwood has the better selection, though the JoCo options seem to be improving in their variety.

I'll 2nd this. Cheese is my downfall, I can pass desserts, frois gras, you name it....but I can't pass up cheese. Better Cheddar is my dream job (NOT, I'd weigh 200 lbs!!) but I adore their cheeses. Costco in Midtown has some surprising selections. Watch for Comte, a delicious french cheese that is great with fruits. I think it's onlhy 9.99 for a lb or so, and it's fab.
