coming to visit from nyc

i posted this on the nyc board but wanted a local's p.o.v. on restaurant suggestions for 3 unpretentious foodie gals (so, doesn't need to be the hot, expensive place, but must have great food and must be a cool spot w/a welcoming vibe) and a mature 9 y.o. (so not a family restaurant). not sure where we're staying yet but hope to be central. thank you so much in advance.

you should check this thread: "must" place to eat in Quebec city

and a report from another visitor:

My favorite is probably Toast (old-port)
and I think Café du monde would be a great place to go too for more simple (than toast) yet excellent food

I have only been there once - but I would recommend Garde Manger in Old Montreal. The place is a little loud - but the music is great, service was attentive and very helpful, great wine, and the food was delicious. Small place, so book ahead.

Le Garde Manger is in Montreal. Are you going to Quebec City or Montreal or both?

Price range and desired location? "Central" could mean lots of things.

sorry:( i'll post back when we book a hotel. i believe we'll be staying in/near old quebec and would certainly travel a bit for a great place but i just don't know the city well enough to know what is considered ridiculously far in your city. as for price range, moderate is fine but again, i know what that means in ny... ideally, a place where locals go rather than something too touristy. not a 'destination' place in the traditional sense of the word.

So to clarify, you'll be visiting Quebec City and not Montreal? If so, you can ignore the Garde Manger rec. below as it's in Montreal. Your original post doesn't mention city.
