Got company in town for Stampede visiting! And they want to go to the best steakhouse in town! I am not a red meat eater and have no idea where to take them! Can somebody please help me out with some suggestions! We are very close to downtown so somewhere Central would be great too! Thanks for you help!!!

CARVERS - If you want steak house in an upscale format (unlike the very traditional style of Caesars which I also love) try Carvers in the Sheraton Airport. It is one of the few more fine / high end dining establishements in NE Calgary. The salad that comes with your steak is excellent and beautiful as it stands up on the plate with a cucumber belt but you can upgrade to the tableside Caesar salad for fun. AND the flambee Strawberry almond creps prepared table side for dessert is stunning. This is the ONLY place I know in Calgary where if you order a special coffee after dinner that they actually flame the glass tableside. This place is upscale and showy. Very, very good.

Sometimes people just want steak and I'd say go for it. I think Caesar's Steak House is hilarious and I had a delicious steak Diane there the other day. The waiters mostly all have mustaches and are pretty funny old guys. For a very good Alberta beef experience you could also go to 4th St. Meats and do your own grilling. You can buy some very high quality stuff there.

Maws, where are your exclamation points?! Also, hooray for non-ironic mustaches!

Now, this place IS a STEAK house! Mawson, don't you love the guy on the grill in the bubble? I LOVE Caesars but I agree it is like walking into the 70's ... but in a good way. mmmm.... more cheesy bread please.

My vote will be for the steak for two at Mercato. I found in the last year or so, the food at Vintage has gone significantly downhill. Caesars is too old school for me, the keg is the same everywhere. If you couldnt get into Mercato, I would go with Chicago Chop House.

sorry, to sum up: Caesars. See also: the Trib, vintage chop house, chicago chop house, the keg, and IME, virtually every other (mid-high end, non-ethnic) resto in calgary will serve decent steak.

but i'd have to agree with john that perpetuating the stereotype of calgary as nothing but stampede and beef does little to grow the image of our town in visitor's eyes... so take them to a nice restaurant, like say River Cafe or Chef's Table, or Mercato. The steaks there will be great, and the other options will be even better :)
