Hoa Bien (MSP) "Vietnamese Dim Sum" on weekends?
Driving down University yesterday I couldnt help but notice a sing affixed to the front of Hoa Bien advertising a new weekend VN style dim sum. Im not a huge HB fan, ive eaten there plenty and liked it, but i prefer the bun and spring rolls at saigon and the pho at ca dao, so i dont often have occasion to go in.
i know mai village does dim sum also that has gotten some pretty ho hum reviews - i was wondering if anyone had tried this or heard anything about it? any HB fans out there want to ask the next time you stop in? i know there are a lot of chinese-vietnamese but i'd be curious to know how similar this vietnamese style is to traditional dim sum.
I saw a blog post somewhere that clarified what's on offer at Hoa Bien. It's not really dim sum, it's small plates of tasty Vietnamese dishes - things like tiny egg rolls, shrimp on sugar cane, and banh xeo (which is fabulous at Hoa Bien). It sounds like a great way to taste several of these dishes in a small-plate version.
I really want to go, but my weekends are fully booked until September...

P.S. Aha - here it is. Jeremy Iggers has been there already (of course):

$4.95 for a dim sum plate? That's not livin' the High Life. Either do it up, or do something different. How about a Vietnamese brunch?

I was with the small Iggers group that day, and his post pretty much summed up the consensus of all four of us. I'd recommend doing what he suggested--order a couple of the small plates to share, then choose from the regular menu--for the same reasons he gave. Kevin47, each plate had plenty for four people to share, with at least two additional helpings. I don't feel that they were overpriced at all.
