BH Cheese Store by far has the most extensive selection. If you are in the Valley, however, I recommend the Village Gourmet on Tujunga, just South of Moorpark. Sort of a miniature BH Cheese Store with various other great gourmet products.

Although The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills offers many fine cheeses, they do not offer a good selection of the cheeses which interest you.

Their selection of both aged English cheeses and fine new American cheeses is poor, almost bordering on antagonistic. Their collection has a pronounced European emphasis.

La Brea Bakery and Whole Foods, on occasion, have a good selection of cheeses aged by Neil's Yard Dairy. They both are more likely to have an interesting assortment of American cheese as well.

If you want to try mail order, we recently tasted this in Boston: Fleur de Tesche made at Bittersweet Plantation Dairy. Wonderfully complex.

I love this place, but it is truly very small & selection of about 20 different cheeses max. Just picked up 2 last week - the Hoch Ybrig (say that without pleghm rising!) from Switzerland - nutty, little crystals, yet still smooth - absolutely delicious. An Italian that looked like parmesan reggiano with whole walnuts in it, didn't have much taste at all - but it looked so good ;(

While you're there, try their Thai beef salad w/ roasted vegs - addicting!

Since nobody's given you an OC hookup yet, check out the Laguna Culinary Arts Cheese Shop. It's on the frontage road just south of the Festival of Arts site. James is the Englishman who runs the cheese operation, and has 20+ years in cheesemongering.

For disclosure's sake, I know the managers of this place; I used to work for one of them. I go here because the cheese is good, they care about the product, and they know what's what, minus the drive to Beverly Hills and the parking hassle.

I'm not really sure about the selection of English and California cheese is at the Cheese Store of Silver Lake. They do carry a very good selection of other European cheeses, much like the Beverly Hills store (they're not related, but the proprietor of the Silver Lake shop used to work at the BH store and got some help from it when he was first getting the Silver Lake store going).

Best prices for frugal hounds at good ol' TJ's. Tasty Brit Isles cheeses including English Stilton & Irish Dubliner at very reasonable prices. On American side, Cabot extra sharp cheddar cheaper than 25 yrs ago when we lived in NE. For French, decent brie for $5/lb. For Dutch, check out the sheep's milk gouda.
Anyway, after you've blown your wad at the competitors, TJ's is the place for a limited selection of good quality cheses at rock bottom prices
