Best Potato TAcos-SD?

p

On Daantaat's 10 best list, she/he has "mashed potato tacos at Mama Testa's." For years my husband has raved about his friend's tia's tacos de papas. I'd love to surprise him. So where are the best potato tacos in San Diego? Is Daantaat right?

I think the "potato taquito" (as it is listed on the menu) from Buenos Dias Taco Shop on Jackson Drive just South of I-8 in La Mesa is excellent. (It is mashed potato, deep fried in a half folded corn tortilla, topped with lettuce, tomato, salsa and sour cream; not anything rolled). The place is open 24/7 and is closer to home for me than MT.

That place is now called either Sol or Sun Tacos.

Yes, Daantaat is right. The mashed potato tacos at Mama Test are exquisitely good and come either "duro" or "blanda" - hard or soft. Don't order the mashed potato soft tacos, the hard shell is what you want here. They're on the menu as Empapado, 3 to an order.

Aqui es Texcoco does mashed potato filled rolled tacos that are also extremely good. It's almost a toss up which one is better. I'd probably give a slight edge to Mama Testa because of the way the potatoes are seasoned. But the rolled tacos at Aqui es Texcoco are veyr satisfying, especially when eaten with the deep, dark, brick red salsa.

        X 2 Mama Testa.

Although the potato rolled tacos at El Zarape come in a close second in my book.

Aqui Es Texcoco potato tacos are amazing. One of my favorite vegetarian dishes in town.

Yep, agree with Mama Testa's. And next week we get to watch Cesar take on Bobby Flay in a fish taco challenge.

              What's this about Bobby Flay?

9:00 pm our time, this is a first run for the prime time show. The segment was filmed about 2 months ago at (of all places) The Prado.

Do you happen to know how Cesar was chosen for this?

9-10 pm PST. I just set up the recording via Tivo. They're calling it the "fish taco" and "puffy taco" challenges.

I don't have cable. Will someone let us know if it ends up on youtube? Or write here any salient bits? Thanks!

We were at Mama Testa's last night, and, damn, I'd forgotten just how good the empapados (hard shell mashed potato tacos) were. Our server told us they were out of the catfish tacos because that was what Cesar made for the Throwdown, and they've been in high demand. For anyone interested, they're having a viewing of the Throwdown at the shop tomorrow night.

I finally caught the Throwdown over the weekend...
Anyone know where I can try a puffy taco in SD?
