Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in New Orleans

White Linen Night

Is anyone going to White Linen Night this year? We have never gone so just wondered what food and beverage options are offered-or if we should do dinner prior to going. Are the cash bars in each gallery or directly on Julia? I also heard of an after party that you have to purchase tickets for. Any word on this? We are actually shopping for a few new pieces, so thought if I fed my husband a few cocktails he would be in a "buying" mood. Are there food booths, or does each gallery have a small selection of food? Thanks y'all!

    1. Scarlett -- there are some details here:

I also recommend Shade for dinner, but make a reservation.... They'll be pretty busy

Never been to Shade...will have to look into it. We made reservations at Stella that night, but will be changing to Sunday. Thanks!

Just looked this up-it was from Houston Heights. No wonder I have never heard of Shade. It did reference a New Orleans/HH connection. Maybe every city is having this type of event on Saturday the 1st. Thanks though! Shade looks great. Will have to try if I am in the area.

Dang! I was hoping that I could attend in my "white linen" suit and be right at home.

Please attend, and let us all know how it goes.

It does seem that more cities are doing all sorts of dining/historic events. My e-mail box is filling up with many of these all around the US. Summer must be tough around the continent.

                  Enjoy,

                2. There is one block of Julia where all the food venders (local restaurants) will be located. There are also a few drink booths scattered along Julia serving wine, beer and cocktails. Each gallery may or may not have some wine or snacks gratis. Last year, we tried a couple of the food items, but had dinner afterwards elsewhere. Not planning on attending this year......don't know about the after party.

                    1. From my admittedly none-too-good memory, the after-party is at the CAC, and yes, tickets are required. It goes rather late. Bayou Teche is spot on for the basics for the eve, Food and Drink booths in streets, some galleries having their own offerings inside. Be forewarned, It was absolutely mobbed last year, and many took refuge from the heat in the bars in the vicinity. Our group ducked into a packed to the gills La Cote and had some delicious cocktails but they were slammed. If you want to dine in the area, definitely get your reservations quick and be ready for a very busy dining room! I'm still planning on venturing out, as it is entertaining, but just be ready for the crowds.

yep, I worked the vip afterparty at the cac last year and it was a mob scene...they ordered hors for 500 and every last bit was eaten up...Stiletto vodka sponsored that one and there were martini's aplenty

                          • White Linen Night is a good time. You pay cash for tickets to then use at the makeshift bars setup along Julia and then walk along ducking inside the galleries.

Lucy's will have a big party set up that night, but you will likely not even be able to get in the door. La Boca, La Cote, and Tommy's will all be packed. For dinner I would suggest maybe trying 7 on Fulton or Wolfe's in the Warehouse District. No one ever seems to go to either, and I had a killer meal at Wolfe's after WLN last year:

I've eaten at 7 and it's nothing special. I have heard wonderful things about Wolfe's...just haven't made it there yet.

                              • Since I had to look it up, perhaps there are others who do not know the date of this event. White Linen is Saturday 8/1 and Dirty Linen is Saturday 8/8.

                                  1. re: TaTee

We did Dirty Linen night in the Quarter last year, and there really wasn't any organized food booths, the art galleries provided hors d'oerves and liquor, some had liquor only, nothing substantial in either department

but it was fun 'cause it was in the FQ

                                    • Yes, WL night can be fun, depending on what you're up for, but it is almost guaranteed to be mobbed and hot. The last two times we went (were out of town last year and will be this year), I had reservations at two excellent restaurants where we had pretty lousy experiences: had long waits despite reservations, lots of "out of" menu selections, really high noise levels, pretty poor service. I'm not naming the restaurants because they have been great on all other occasions; I think it's just too difficult to be at their best under these circumstances. For dinner that night, I'd go farther afield, before or after WL.
I've also had some of the street food--some pretty good, some not so good. I'm also not crazy about the ticket system on the street, but I suppose it's what works best. Some galleries will serve wine, maybe some cheese and crackers, but with the crowds, supplies get depleted quickly.
I actually enjoy the first Saturday gallery openings much more, particularly if one is really going art shopping or just gazing. Still, if we were in town, we'd go to White Linen night. It is a wonderful spectacle, great people watching. But not a great time to patronize the bars or restaurants in the area.
I've never been to Dirty Linen, but I have a friend who has sworn off WL and loves DL.
                                      Whatever you decide, enjoy!

                                        1. re: nomadchowwoman

SO TRUE. there's too much people at white linen night plus the heat = uncomfortable.

                                          • I'd cab it or get a driver.
or better, stay in a hotel in the area for the night.
                                            cheers!
