Merengue on Monday

We went for dinner to Merengue on monday night after impressive Hound reviews as the best Dominician restaurant around and it is a favorite for various Red Sox players for a taste of home. We were somewhat disappointed after all the raves. The shrimp ceviche were whole shrimp that seemed precooked and not "cooked" in lemon jiuce. The fried cheese and Dominican salami was OK but not really interesting. The pork mofongo was a little dense. and the tostones with shrimp suffered from overcooked )precooked?) shrimp though the creole sauce was nice. Tres leches cake was tasty but the leches was a thin. Things were OK but nothing was delicious. Prices are very reasonable and the staff and room are nice Did we hit this on chef's night off? Are we expecting too much or order poorly? Yelys and Alex's chimis and the departed Cafeteria Tropicale have all been much tastier. Any Merengue fans out there have any feedback?
