Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the Greater Los Angeles Area (including Orange & Ventura Counties and SW San Bernardino County)

Good breakfast (and kid-friendly) near LAX/South Bay?

We've got to make the trek dawn tomorrow to take the wife to LAX to fly out for a trip. I'd like to reward the kids with a nice breakfast after they need to get up so early. Any suggestions for the LAX area or even in the South Bay beach cities? Thanks.

    1. uncle bill's pancakes in manhattan beach
or, for more healthful fare (i.e. turkey bacon rather than pork bacon),
the cafe at the gym, the spectrum club, near howard hughes promenade.
      (they will validate parking.)

I second Uncle Bill's. They make a great bacon cheddar cheese waffle plus an ocean view from the patio.

          • The Kettle , Uncle Bills is a great suggestion, but they would probably LOVE the Original Pancake house!

Great suggestions so far...and quick, too! OPH is a favorite of ours in South OC so I'll probably pass, but I used to live in N Redondo Beach 20 (gulp) years ago when I moved to SoCal and I remember eating at either the Kettle or Uncle Bill's (probably UB's because I remember it was on a corner). One of those sounds like it will be great, and maybe an hour or so at the beach afterwards before hitting the road home.

The Kettle's on a Korner..err Corner too, (and Uncle Bill's borders on a "walk street" rather than an actual "drive street" IIRC).

See, now I"m really confused. By the address numbers I assumed...apparently wrongly. Well, I think the answer is drop mom at the airport and the kids and I will head south down Sepulveda and I'll let them choose which place!

Excellent plan, Bob. Hope you'll report back on how everyone likes their food in an "after action" debrief. ;-D>

Well, after cruising past the IHOP on Sepulveda in El Segundo (where the kids wanted to stop), we headed out to Manhattan Beach and I gave them the choice of the Kettle (which I did used to frequent on occasion) or Uncle Bill's. UB's won out and we had a good breakfast sitting out on the relatively cool patio...but the view of the ocean (which the kids got, not me!). Pancakes were good and fluffy, french toast was ok, nothing special, service was casual but fine. It made the drive back to sout OC more tolerable for sure after getting the young ones up so early!

Having lived in MB back in the mid 70's I've always liked the vibes of places like UB's and Martha's down in Hermosa. Glad you survived the experience, Bob and thanks for checking back in with your report. I plan on getting down to the Kettle some early morning for a nostalgia breakfast, and when I do I'll post.

We spent about 2 hours afterwards going through MB/HB/RB to see what has changed since I lived there 20 years ago and then spent an hour at the Redondo Beach pier so the kids could run around and have some fun.

                                            1. re: RSMBob

Don't throw things at me!!! But, next time you are at the RB pier, the El Torito is pretty good. Perhaps not authentic, but spicy and differnt items are offered.

                                2. Original Pancake House on PCH

                                    1. Pann's on La Tijera and La Cienega.

if you go to pann's don't get the waffle unless you are enamored/satisfied with any of the frozen waffles that can be found at any grocery store.

                                            1. re: westsidegal

Really?!?! I was gonna try them at some point figuring they'd be as good as their other food. What a shame. Thanks for the warning:(

                                            2. Don't forget Jinky's Cafe in Santa Monica, just a 20 minutes North of LAX
