self cleaning cycle in ovens

Soop Jul 7, 2009 03:01 AM

What does this actually do? Does it just heat to a ridiculous degree and burn everything in the oven to a crisp? Does it use any cleaning fluid scrubbing?

It must take a massive amount of power - and perhaps is electric only?

Can you even get them in England?

I have a gas self clean oven.
When you turn on the cleaning cycle, the oven door locks so you can't open it. Then the oven heats up to around 900ºF, we can regulate the length of the cycle from 2-4 hours.

Absolutely no smoke from ours when we do it, mind you we don't let it go too long between cleanings. It's gas and we don't notice any difference in the gas bill for months that we do a cleaning and months that we don't - In the end how much do you pay for a bottle of oven cleaner and an hour of your time to hand scrub the oven?

Here is some info on how they work:
