South Indian Vegetarian in Calgary

A vegetarian friend of mine told me that he tried to get in to Mysore Palace downtown on the weekend, but it was closed (for good?). Anpurna in the south east went downhill after the change in ownership a year or so ago. Can anyone recommend a good south Indian vegetarian place for dosas, idlis etc - anywhere in the city?

Southern Spice is the ONLY place I have had Dosa in Calgary! They do a bang up job, and Wed (i believe) is dosa day... all there varieties are like $5.95 or something wonderful.

The space seems to slowly improve with each visit, as has the design, logo, menu etc... A very young gal and her mother own it, and I love supporting other young ladies in business.

Every time I have been there, I am thrilled with the price and the food. The service has been hit and miss, but I'll put up with one less drink in exchange for great Dosa!

The clientele on all my visits has been only Indians other than myself.. which is always encouraging & totally works for me (a good tell to use also when selecting a sushi restaurant)

It is way way way out in castleridge in an industrial strip, but well worth the drive and getting lost to find the place.

As for Anpurna It was my favourite years ago before it closed and reopened... I have been once since the reopening and sadly I will not rush back. My food was freezing and burning al at once in that frozen micro-waved way, which I can do from home!

Thank you for the recs John and CookieGal. My friends tried out Southern Spice on the weekend for the buffet, they said it was ok. It was the same location as the old Mysore Palace in the NE, same look, same kind of buffet as in the old Mysore Palace days - they had not been up to the NE address since the downtown location opened up. I told them that reviews on the buffet were mixed but they like trying buffets since they don't know the cuisine. I will try the menu next week when I am back in town and report back.

Buffet is such a tricky way to try out a restaurant. Go there and order a dosa and your heart will leap with joy as it sizzles still piping hot when it's served to you with the best ever dahl!

Too bad about Mysore- one number disconnected, other w/ "full" voicemail box...

There is at least one other option that I've heard positive things about, Southern Spice at 4655 54th Ave NE.
