short report on max restaurant in SO
tried max restaurant for the first time since they redecorated.
had the ahi towers for a starter and the black cod in miso sauce for my entree.
have to admit that, sadly, the food was not as good as i remembered it to be in the past.
the ahi towers were served on little pucks of crispy rice that were too thick and too crisp to cut or to be able to bite off a portion, and they were too big to comfortably eat as a single bite.. the basic flavors, though were good, but there was no way to eat them with any kind of grace. had they been even a little bigger, they would have caused gagging.
the miso cod was simply too sweet, overcooked, oversauced, and served on overcooked greasy/oily, sugary vegetables. i'm sure it was a good piece of fish before the kitchen transformed it.
thought their ferrari-caranno (sp?) chardonnay at $12/glass seemed a bit steep for what it was.
this was the first time i've eaten there in a little over a year. i seem to remember the food being much better back then. maybe i should have ordered other items. . . . .
I was just there the on Wednesday for the first time. We had the Chicken liver pate and lamb taco appetizers. I had the Hanger steak, others at the table had the Cod and the hamburger. For the most part everything was solid if un-spectacular. The 2 cod's at our table looked like the were cooked properly and were well enjoyed.
Maybe it's just me but the menu just seems dated to me. Just seems like a lot of 90's inspired food. Nothing was bad though, except for the burger which needed to be redone. The Ridge Zin was excellent as well! I thought the wine list had some nice bottles.
i only had those two dishes, but they were both so flawed that i will avoid ever returning.
there are just too many other restaurants that i love for me to be able to justify spending any money at max in an attempt to discover if any of the other menu items might have some merit. . . . .

believe me, i was surprised too!!
all the times i ate there before the redo (about a year ago or so), the dishes i had been served were solid, if not inspired. it's as if these dishes came out of a different kitchen. . . .
also, in the past, as i did this time, i always order fish, so the outcomes should not have been SO different. . . .
