Mariscos Puerta Esperanza - still good?

This place had some wonderful recommendations many months ago, but I still haven't been, and haven't heard anything about it lately. Has anyone been recently, is the food still great, is Santiago still the chef? Wanting to finally try it, but want to know if it's still as good as ever?

Last time I was there, it was excellent. But that was a few months ago. Unfortunately, whenever I go to OC, I always end up eating Vietnamese food (unfortunately because I never get to eat OC mexican food).

When I was there, we were the only customers. I hope all the press means that they started getting more customers because I can't see how they could stay in business.

I haven't been in three weeks, but it was as good as ever last I went, and Santiago was still there. Be bold -- just go instead of worrying. If it's good to you, you can contribute a new accolade and if it's bad you can trash it on here. :-)

But I don't live in OC, so if I go somewhere, it has to 'count'. I think it is perfectly reasonable to ask if it is still good. All of the reviews I read commented on the lack of customers and I also found that to be the case. If I am eating fish, I want to make sure it is fresh.

Glad to hear it is still good. When I went, the food was very good and the owner was a really nice guy.

Agree...it's always a concern when a fish/seafood restaurant is not busy. Especially in this economy, restauranteurs must minimize waste, and with fish, there is always the concern that it may not always be optimally fresh. But, I have never heard anything negative about MPE, and since it is frequently highly recommended by CH's some of whom I very much trust, I am going to try it at my first opportunity....very soon!

I agree, I'm just saying you won't waste a meal and I've never had any problems with freshness. Chente is still the Rey de Los Mariscos, but MPE is a good place.

I was there last night and yes, Santiago is still there. It is still as wonderful and still as empty. We were there about 6:30 pm and only 3 tables were seated. I can't believe more people haven't found this marvelous place.
