Curious about this one. A recent thread of mine that didn't even start from a legal perspective whatsoever, but was about giving music as a hostess gift, was quickly shut down by CH because a couple of people had commented on downloading music,( which is not even always illegal btw), and CH stated that it was not in a position to support such a discussion. Why not just delete some comments and allow the thread ? Other threads about host gifting are allowed.

And yet discussions on smuggling foodstuffs into various countries, or discussions about marijuana as an ingredient, i've not seen shut down (not that I want to, I mention these as curiosities), no comment on the legality, unless posters bring it up. How is it that CH is in a position to support these discussions ?

Thanks for posting this. As you may have noticed, I raised that issue and even reported it in the form of a question not a judgment but got no response. I'm FAR from a goody-two-shoes but it seems like an area that CH corporate would rather not head into.

The legality of music downloading and mix tapes really has nothing to do with food, and that conversation seemed pretty determined to head down that path, so we eventually shut it down.

We'd really prefer that the thread about stuff to bring back from overseas stayed more firmly rooted in what people have and have not brought back or even in what is and isn't legal, instead of on whether the person should have asked the question in the first place, which is the kind of discussion about discussion that's off topic outside of Site Talk.

We have pretty consistently shut down discussions of marijuana as an ingredient in recent years. If there are any out there, we either haven't seen them (we don't read everything), or they may be from the older archives.

As in all moderation decisions, a variety of factors go into every one -- whether we've even seen the conversation in question, how it's gone up to that point, whether we think it'll stay on track with just a little pruning or will require constant babysitting in the future, how food-related the actual, on-topic portions of the thread are, etc.

Thanks. Sounds like I was on solid ground asking OP if she wanted advice on smuggling and that that would not be alright. And then I referred her to the CBP site that addresses that.

Telling people what they should and shouldn't post is really not okay. If you feel that a post might be a problem, please report it, rather than opening a debate within the thread about whether it's okay.

I know it's Jacquilynne writing this, so it's a different thing, but may I say that I found the irony of such a statement well amusing?

imno-I'm glad the music discussion wound up locked. It headed in a direction I didn't want to go in either but I'm not the type to back down until the convo gets personal.
But imno-I appreciated the nod then and still do. Enjoy!
