900 Grayson: Good food, bizarre service

pane Jul 3, 2009 05:43 PM

Stars aligned today: I was off of work, a friend was visiting from out of town, and we had a borrowed car, so we decided to travel over to the East Bay to get breakfast at 900 Grayson, which I'd long wanted to try.

We arrived a few minutes shy of 10:30, and heard a server/host brusquely inform the guest in front of us, "Well, we stop serving breakfast at 10:45, so if your friends aren't here now, you're not going to make it."

Score, we thought--just made it. It soon became clear from his flurried movements and squawks at other patrons that the breakfast/lunch transition was bothering the guy. Feeling like we were imposing, we ordered quickly--two of us had chicken and waffles, a third had tofu scramble.

I liked my chicken and waffles, and my friend especially liked the hash browns with her tofu dish. The chicken was nicely seasoned (though I prefer Bakesale Betty's thicker, juicier meat). While we were trying to enjoy our food, we heard a shout from the back of the restaurant.

An elderly customer yelled something along the lines of "I can't believe this! The rudeness of your service is incredible!" From the front of our restaurant, our server yelled back "We look forward to never serving you again."

No, I'm not kidding. Record scratch, followed by silence for a good five minutes.

I can't recall a time when I've felt so unwelcome at a restaurant, or where I've witnessed service more unprofessional and rude. Sure I understand wanting a smooth transition between services and menus, but you'd think they could manage that without alienating their customers. Not sure if this is a recurring problem or we just stopped in on a bad day, but I won't be back.

I think the transition from breakfast to lunch is a problem there. The menu says that they start serving lunch at 11:30 and they were happy to seat us at 11:30, but then we were ignored until the server took our order at noon. When we asked what was up, we got an eye-roll. I haven't been back since.

Wow, that's an amazing oversight, but it's right there on the Web site:

"Business Hours: 8am to 3pm Monday - Friday"

      Breakfast: "Served 8am - 10:45am"

      Lunch: "Served 11:30am-3pm"

I've been there maybe 4 times. Service has ranged from "I should never return" to "pleasant." At best, there always seemed to be some aloofness. Food has been ok to very good. But I haven't been back in at least a year.
